Dhaka, November 26, 2024 – The Government of Bangladesh has strongly rejected a recent statement made by India’s Ministry of External Affairs concerning the arrest of Sri Chinmoy Krishna Das, calling it “misconstrued” and an interference in the country’s internal matters.

In a press release issued today, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “utter dismay and deep sense of hurt” over what it described as “unfounded statements” that misrepresent facts and go against the spirit of friendship between the two neighboring countries. The statement clarified that Sri Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on specific charges, and the issue is currently being addressed by the judiciary.

“The Government of Bangladesh reaffirms that the judiciary is independent and does not tolerate any interference in its work,” the statement emphasized, adding that the case will be resolved in accordance with the rule of law.

The press release also highlighted Bangladesh’s commitment to religious harmony and the rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith, to practice their religious beliefs freely. It pointed to the recent peaceful observance of Durga Puja across the country as an example of its dedication to ensuring religious tolerance and security for all, including minority communities.

Meanwhile, the government condemned the killing of Advocate Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram earlier today, pledging heightened security to maintain communal harmony. Authorities have increased vigilance in the port city to prevent further unrest.

The Government of Bangladesh reiterated its determination to combat impunity for gross human rights violations and stressed its commitment to upholding the rights and safety of all citizens, treating religious majorities and minorities equally.

This development underscores the delicate nature of bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, with both countries traditionally emphasizing mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.
